Toca Boca wins at apps.
The Swedish developer is a DGOE fave, and with good reason. Their apps aren’t games so much as digital toys that continuously see me lifting the time limits I set on my kids’ iOS screen time. Because creativity and open-ended play.
But now there’s a band.
My kids heart it like a Hobbit hearts a second breakfast.
Meh. Mainly because the band only knows one song that has a way of working itself into a weeklong earworm that makes your brain cry.
That being said, it’s way fun for little sound mixers who don’t mind endless loops of repetitive music (48 in all). And considering all parents lose a considerable amount of patience for noise-making anything once their kids start playing with it, it really has nothing to do with the app.
Colorful graphics and 16 cool characters – each with their own quirky sound and moves – are just waiting for their moment on the main stage. Kids just move band members to the stage one by one to get the music started, and the different combinations make for varied sounds, beats and rhythms.
Hint: Drag a vocalist or instrumentalist to the special star spot on the top row of the stage and watch them go solo.
As with all Toca Boca apps, the interface is super intuitive, there are no time limits, rules, in-app purchases or external advertising.
