Because catchy music and choreographed numbers and iconic cinematic awesome.
We regret nothing.
As a kid, mainstream TV and cable weren’t allowed at my house, so my screen time consisted of black-and-white classics (think Shirley Temple and Laurel & Hardy), Disney flicks on VHS, period dramas, foreign films, and of course, musicals. (Gene Kelly is my spirit animal.)
Outings to the opera and theatre were a marvelously regular thing, which inspired me to try out my own singing (not so much dancing) chops in summer camp plays and school performances of The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music (no one looks good in a wimple), and a musical revue that featured numbers from Oklahoma, South Pacific, Singin’ in the Rain, The King and I, Godspell, There’s No Business Like Show Business, Gigi, Meet Me in St. Louis, West Side Story, Les Mis, The Music Man, and Cats.
College saw me auditioning for and making it into a select 40-voice ensemble that kept a grueling rehearsal and performance schedule, including regular tours across the country, performances at Carnegie Hall and an annual multi-night Madrigal performance sung in the Renaissance and Baroque styles. And yes, we wore elaborate costumes to match.
My love of the theatre runs deep, and because of it, I’ve been introducing my own two to musicals, albeit a more modern kind to start. Both have attended live performances of Aladdin and Pinkalicious the Musical, and regularly run around the house belting out scores from Frozen, Cinderella, Tangled, The Princess and the Frog, The Little Mermaid and other Disney classics.
Netflix makes it easy to continue (or start) sharing must-see song and dance with kids, with a vast collection of musical movies – both vintage and modern – available to stream right now.
