Called “Super-Flemish,” the series translates modern mythological and fairy tale figures like Superman, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, Wolverine, Darth Maul, R2-D2, Captain America, Robin and others into 16th century Flemish portraiture inspired by Dutch masters like Jan Vermeer and Jan van Eyck.
More than 100 cosplayers (including several members from the 501st Legion) posed for the portraits, which are actually photographs. The entire collection of works premiered at the Grand Palais in Paris last weekend with this description:
“What if Superman was born in the sixteenth century? And what if the Hulk was a Duke? How might Van Eyck have portrayed Snow White? Sacha’s discovery of these characters, which goes back to childhood, gave birth to a desire to re-appropriate them, to take them back to a time forming the cornerstone of modern western art.”
Now this is how you break the internet.
