Ant-Man, Captain America, The Avengers, Doctor Strange – Marvel’s cinematic universe keeps expanding, and if Guardians of the Galaxy‘s intergalactic team of unlikely superheroes is any kind of indicator, it’s going to be awesome.
Helmed by Star-Lord Peter Quill, a man-child space adventurer with a Walkman; Gamora, a stone cold assassin with a dysfunctional family; Groot, a tree-like humanoid we love to love, Drax the Destroyer, a tatted up alien hell bent on bone-crushing revenge; and Rocket Raccoon, a scrappy anthropomorphic marksman; the Milano crew first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes, Issue #18, back in Jan. 1969. The little known comic blasted onto the big screen this past August, and blew everyone’s minds when it became the summer’s top-grossing domestic release.
And now that the holiday season is upon us, kids and parents alike are ready to relive the action-packed adventure that sees the ragtag rivals-turned-allies band together to save the universe from villainy.
Disney asked us to own the galaxy by putting our own intergalactic spin on a Marvel-ous (heh) Guardians of the Galaxy-themed family movie night, so I headed out to Walmart to pick up the movie and GOT THE LAST ONE.
SO MUCH MUSTACHE SWEAT. (I had already told the kids what I was getting. And by kids, I mean husband.)
Turns out Walmart has some pretty cool exclusives too. The Blu-ray includes an Exclusive Character O-Sleeve in five different designs; while the Exclusive ZinePak Edition of the Awesome Mix Vol. 1 soundtrack includes a 64-page magazine with cast and crew interviews, exclusive behind-the-scenes photos and trivia, plus a custom “cassette” laptop decal. Because everything old is new again.
Look for the stacked in-store GOTG display for everything mentioned in this post and more (like action figures and space toys), and we won’t judge you at all if you somehow manage to come home with a LEGO Super Heroes Knowhere Escape Mission, Star-Lord Battle Mask and Blaster, and Disney Infinity 2.0 Groot, Drax and Rocket Raccoon figures (on sale for $13.96 each + a free $5 Walmart gift card from December 7-13.)
And since we like snacking with our space adventures, I dreamed up a fun little GOTG-inspired recipe that’s out of this world and made a yummy video set to “Hooked on a Feeling” as proof of the the snacking awesome.)
Equal parts salty and sweet, Awesome Popcorn Mix comes together in minutes and is super easy to make. This batch happened while my oldest built the entire LEGO set and my youngest surreptitiously took it apart.
If you have purists in the house, present this movie time treat as crazy fuss-free DIY station.
Just put out a few bowls, some big serving spoons and keep all the ingredients segregated (like the first photo) so everyone can customize their popcorn and mix-ins however they like.
Now go make it already. It’s weird and delicious and totally addictive.
- 1 bag of pre-popped, nut-free White Cheddar flavored popcorn
- 1 bag of nut-free pretzel sticks (Groot)
- 1 bag Skittles (Peter Quill)
- 1 bag Sour Patch Kids (Gamora)
- 1 bag Raisinets (Rocket Raccoon)
- 1 bag Whoppers (Drax)
- large bowl suitable for passing
- Pour ¼ bag of popcorn into your bowl.
- Layer with candy and pretzel sticks.
- Repeat.
Store your mix in a tightly-sealed container or plastic bag to keep the popcorn from going stale. We've found it stays fresh for about 3 days that way.
Cute post. I did this one as well and I love your recipe ideas. Never had skittle or Sour Patch kids in my popcorn. Have always gone for the more chocolate type of foods to compliment the popcorn. Good choice on the toy, too.
I love this idea! ‘Tis the season of snack mixes. I just made a huge batch of dairy free Chex mix for my husband to enjoy at home and work. I’m making some mixes for holiday gifts as well. I love the idea of this popcorn mix.
That popcorn mix looks so good! I LOVE Sour Patch Kids! I didn’t get a chance to see Guardians of the Galaxy in theaters, I actually just saw it last night!
Yum! Sour Patch Kids!!!
My hubby and I just watched GotG this weekend and really liked it! We decided we will wait a while longer for the kids to watch it.
This popcorn looks great for a fun family movie night with GOTG as the main feature! #client
