Geek out about Camp Google. (We are.) | Dearest Geeks of EarthOur kids are always asking questions: How do fish talk to each other? How far away is space? Why do bugs glow? Why do I get a brain freeze? Where does lava come from? Why do guitars have holes in them? Why does pepper make me sneeze? Where is a dog’s belly button? Why do tigers have stripes? Why can’t I tickle myself?

And if your kids are anything like ours, their curiosity is infinite. They want to know everything about everything, and it’s kind of awesome. The most brilliant thinkers never stop asking questions, and delving into the answers is the best way to help kids (and us) tumble down the best kind of rabbit hole that revolves around discovery and exploration.

Google knows, and teamed up with National Geographic, The National Park Service, NASA and the Khan Academy to launch a new experience called Camp Google. Free for kids everywhere, the virtual 4-week camp is packed with scientific adventures and endless exploration.

Led by experts and designed for kids 7-10 years old, Camp Google kicks off each week with a live adventure that answers some of kids’ most burning questions – What’s at the bottom of the ocean floor? How are volcanoes formed? What do astronauts eat? Why does music make us want to bust a move? – that you can access right from the Camp Google Portal.

Miss a week? No worries. Camp activities can be accessed any time.

The learnathon-turned-virtual-awesome kicks off on July 13th at 3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT with Ocean Week.

Kids will have a chance to go on a one-hour live dive into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean with National Geographic Explorers Erika Bergman and Sylvia Earle via Google Hangout. The unprecedented broadcast will be staged from inside Baseline Explorer’s Submarine ‘Nemo’ where Bergman and  Earle will talk marine biology, technology and then pilot an OpenROV pre-positioned several miles offshore and piloted through a wireless ethernet bridge. Afterwards, head to the National Geographic Kids Ocean Portal for fun activities including a shark personality quiz, conservation conversation, ocean-themed games and more.

Better yet, kids can really dig into their newfound knowledge by participating in hands-on science projects from week to week. All they need are a few Camp Google-suggested supplies (don’t worry, it’s all stuff you can find around the house), internet access and unfettered excitement. They can even collect special Camp Google badges and track their newly mastered skills.

Here’s the full camp schedule, which you’re going to want to bookmark immediately:

  • July 13 – Ocean Week: What’s Down There?: Watch A Live Ocean Dive
  • July 20 – Space Week: How Do You Live in Space?: Explore NASA’s Food Lab
  • July 27 – Nature Week: What Will You Find in the Wild?: Explore A Volcano
  • August 3 – Music Week: Why does Music Make You Move?: Rock Out With Zendaya

So cool! I bet my rising first grader would love some of this. I’d heard of “Camp Google” but never read anything more. Thanks for sharing.

As a former educator and current parent of 2 who are right in the sweet spot for Camp Google, I love the partnerships that Google has created to deliver fun, free, educational content that is engaging for kids! We’re so excited to be learning with NatGeo about oceans and can’t wait for space, nature, and music weeks!
